Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

The self-fulfilling prophecy is a general process of social influence that is of central importance to theory and research aimed at understanding behavior.  According to the self-fulfilling prophecy process, one person’s false belief about another person is behaviorally confirmed through social interaction.  Dr. Madon's research on the self-fulfilling prophecy has focused on its potential to contribute to social problems within public school classrooms and families.  She has also examined how stereotypes contribute to social inequalities by virtue of having cumulative self-fulfilling effects on the behavior of stereotyped individuals.
